A socialist MEP Joe Higgins elected in Ireland
"I just heard the news, I was hoping that you would win the MEP seat, I am absolutely delighted, there is some justice in the world. Terrific stuff." Ger, Cork
"First time I ever voted for a socialist candidate and look what happens! You were sadly missed in the Dáil and I am so pleased you are now going to Europe. Give 'em hell." PJ, Dublin
"Just up. An extra pep in my step. Great day to be a socialist." Pat, Sligo
These are just some of the many comments sent to the Irish Socialist Party since Joe Higgins was elected as a member of the European parliament in Dublin, in a massive blow to the Irish political elite.
With over 50,000 first preference votes, Joe beat two sitting MEPs from Fianna Fáil, the ruling party, and Sinn Féin. This victory comes as the result of tireless campaigning on the part of Socialist Party members and supporters and reflects the seething anger at the government and political establishment in Ireland.
